01 / Match production to demand

More flexibility between one reader and the next.

Print on demand can reduce the need to hold a large quantity of unsold books. It still needs a clear specification, a workable order process and realistic delivery expectations.

01

A first title

Start reaching readers while learning where demand comes from. An initial proof helps you settle the print specification before you invite repeat orders.

02

A growing backlist

Keep older titles available without treating every reprint as a major launch. Agree how each title and file version will be identified when orders are placed.

03

A specialist audience

Serve niche, professional or educational readers whose orders may arrive gradually. Plan around the actual quantity and destination of each order.

02 / Set up the title once, carefully

A repeatable book starts with a clear master.

Make the first order your reference point.

Before planning reader fulfilment, settle the finished size, interior paper, colour, binding and cover. Review an initial printed copy so both you and the team are working toward the same result.

Identify the approved interior and cover with a title and version. Keep draft files separate from production files, and make it clear when a revision replaces the previous version.

If you have several titles, prepare a separate specification for each one. Similar-looking books can have different page counts, paper needs or binding requirements that affect production and cost.

Your title handover

  • Book title and your reference code
  • Approved interior PDF and cover file
  • Finished size, paper, colour and binding
  • Final page count and version date
  • Agreed price basis and payment process
  • Contact for approvals and order questions
03 / From order to dispatch

Keep every reader order unambiguous.

Agree the submission method and information needed with the team. The steps below describe the handover to plan; they do not assume an automatic connection to your sales channel.

  1. Send a clear order reference

Identify the approved title, file version and quantity. For several books going to the same reader, state the complete contents of that order.

  2. Confirm the recipient details

Provide the required recipient name, address, postcode and delivery contact through the agreed channel. Check incomplete addresses before production or dispatch.

  3. Confirm production and shipping

Agree the applicable print charge, payment arrangement and delivery option. Set a reader-facing estimate that accounts for both production and the destination.

  4. Follow the shipment

Use the available tracking reference after dispatch. Agree who will communicate with the reader and how delivery exceptions or print concerns should be raised.

04 / Understand the whole order

Plan your margin beyond the print price.

A small order and a bulk run have different economics. Compare the complete cost for the destinations and order sizes you expect.

Costs and responsibilities to confirm
Part of the orderDiscuss before you launch
Book productionThe agreed specification, quantity per order and whether price changes across quantity bands.
Packing & deliveryThe applicable packing charge, delivery options and how costs vary by destination or shipment size.
Payment & reconciliationHow orders are paid for, which reference identifies each order and how charges are matched to your records.
Reader supportWho answers the reader, what information is needed for a concern and how delivery exceptions are handled.
Returns or failed deliveryThe applicable policy and any costs or actions when a shipment cannot be delivered.
05 / Keep the catalogue current

New edition? Change it deliberately.

One approved version at a time.

A corrected paragraph, a new chapter or a redesigned cover can change the print specification. Send the revised files with a clear version reference and confirm which future orders should use them.

Ask about the status of existing orders before requesting a change. Files already approved or in production may need a different resolution from orders that have not started.

For launches, events or a concentrated batch of demand, compare a planned print run with repeat small orders. The right approach can change over the life of a title.

Your sales channel

Agree the connection.

Tell us where your orders originate and how often you expect to send them. If you need API integration, branded packing or a particular payment model, confirm that requirement and its availability separately.

Print-on-demand questions

A practical start for independent authors.

Do I need to order a large batch first?

The purpose of this service is to discuss printing in quantities aligned with demand. Confirm the minimum available quantity, setup requirements and price for your title with the team.

Can you send a book directly to my reader?

Yes. Discuss direct-to-reader delivery and the order information required. Confirm the shipping option and charges for each destination or your agreed fulfilment arrangement.

Does my website connect automatically?

An automatic connection is not assumed. Share your sales platform and required workflow so the team can confirm a suitable order handover or integration scope.

Will my own branding appear on the parcel?

Tell the team what branding you need and ask what is available. Confirm packing and sender details before promising a particular unboxing experience to readers.

Who handles a delivery problem?

Agree the contact and escalation process during setup. Keep the order and tracking references available, and use the applicable shipping and returns policies when resolving an issue.

What should I send to start the discussion?

Share a sample book file, finished size, binding, page count, expected order quantities, typical destinations and where the orders originate. That makes the fulfilment discussion specific to your title.
